When winter falls onto Quebec, temperatures can easily drop down to –20°C, -30°C and big icy patches can be seen floating on St Laurent river. At that time of the year, young Quebecois often go canoeing down the river to have fun. Armed with a long fibreglass dinghy and dressed with Neoprene waterproof pumps, those young people don’t think about it twice before diving into the cold to practise an exceptional sport: the dinghy on ice. To be good at this sport you need to be familiar with the river and to win it over, since you constantly have to fight against the current strength. Being a very old sport, the dinghy on ice is made of tradition and show. Each year, this sport seduces more and more people, so that on Quebec carnival day, you can have up to 30 crews fighting against the river. We followed a team from the training days till the final race.
