The protest over teh export of gas to the USA via Chile started with blockades and escaladed over the course of a month to hunger-strikes and street demonstrations. At first, only campesinos (farmers) were involved, but by the time the president fled, people from all social classes had joined. The initial victory was won with Gonzalo Sanchez de Lozada (the president) departure, but the whether this protest was truly successful will only be judge by time.
Since the beginning of the conflict, officials estimated that 84 people have died. It seems that more the 200 people from El Alto have died or disappeared.
Free Lens TV produced daily reports for TV and newspapers throughout Europe. We produced also a special report for the german brodcaster WDR. "Blocked in La Paz" has been aired in the "worldwide" program of WDR in primetime.
